Blocked Practice Schedule
Hit balls with, say a 7-iron, until you hit it clean and solid. Most of us practice this way. Repetition builds muscle memory, however after a while our brains aren’t as receptive to these repetitive motions. Our brains tend to become dull and unresponsive towards actions that are repeated over and over.
Random Practice Schedule
After a brief warm-up (half swings with wedge, 12 balls) take out: driver, fairway metal, hybrid, 7-iron, wedge. Lean them against your golf bag.
Imagine a hole, for example #1 at your Home Course. Play the hole in your head by hitting different clubs. You will notice that your brain has to constantly re-adapt as you switch clubs for each shot. The goal is to still hit a bunch of shots with one particular club, just not in a row.
Why Are Random Practice Schedules More EFFECTIVE?
When we come back to a task after an intervening task, our brain must reconstruct the action plan for what we are about to do. It is at this moment that our brains are the most active. More mental activity leads to greater long term learning.
